In the early hours of March 18, 1978, a large fire broke out in the Faculty of Sciences, at the time located on Rua da Escola Politécnica. It was considered one of the biggest fires that occurred in the city of Lisbon, due to its extension, the importance of the goods consumed by the fire and the dangerousness of the materials stored.
